Gunite (Eastern) Ltd was employed as a specialist sub-contractor on the refurbishment of the Bermondsey Central Library. Originally built in 1892, it was closed as a library in 1989 and is now used as council offices. The main front façade of the building was constructed using Portland stone and red rubber bricks. The delicate nature of these materials necessitated careful cleaning using the JOS system. Other elevations were constructed of harder bricks with concrete lintels allowing them to be cleaned using a combination of water jetting, JOS and light chemicals to remove the heavy traffic deposits.
