Traditionally, sections could be increased by the addition of extra reinforcement and concrete or with steel plates bolted and fixed by resin-based adhesives. Where restrictions require minimal additional loading or change in dimension, there are now also a range of strengthening options employing high performance fibre reinforced composites, including Kevlar and carbon fibre.
