Additional Concrete Repair and Refurbishment Works at The University of Birmingham

Gunite have finished another phase of the exterior refurbishment of Birmingham University – Staff House, Edgbaston.

Works were over 4 floors and included a two-storey annex housing a bank and shops.  The main building is used primarily for catering and includes restaurants, cafes, bars and the staff common room.

Inspection identified that deterioration in the concrete frame was causing spalling and cracking in many places, cracked masonry and mortar loss was evident.  The timber framing around panelling and windows was rotting and required repair.

  • Patch repairs
  • MEWPS access
  • Fairing coat
  • Anti-carbonation coatings
  • Gutter lining
  • Balcony screed
  • Replacement sealant/window frames
  • General decoration
  • Balcony hand rails
  • Asbestos panels and cladding to roof plant replaced with Trespa Meteon cladding panels.

All works were carried out by highly trained and experienced operatives and a 10-year guarantee was provided by Sika.
