Gunite were appointed by Messenger Construction Ltd to provide helical masonry and brick repair works to 12 vaults under this magnificent Italianate palace.

Built between 1795 and 1829 for the Hervey family, the general age of the building and ingress of tree roots into the cellars had caused movement below ground.  Work included all associated ventilation, extraction and filtration of air to meet confined space requirements.

Problems

  • Cracked, dislocated and missing bricks
  • Gaps in bed joints
  • Fine tree roots ingress through cracked and missing bricks
  • Inward lateral movement of brickwork arches and wall
  • Outward bowing of cross wall

Solutions

  • Replace missing and cracked bricks with reclaimed bricks from the site laid in with lime mortar
  • Install Cem Ties by Helifix to secure dislocated bricks
  • Install Helibar bed joint reinforcement
  • Remove fine tree roots, rake out and repoint
  • Install Cem Ties by Helifix to secure separated brickwork arches at base and end of wall.

These repairs are part of a much larger conservation project to protect the building for future generations and took place under strict time restraints while the property was open to the public.

Gunite are a member of the Helifix Approved Installer Network so we can offer the best possible design and installation of Helifix sustainable structural solutions including helical wall ties, fixing and masonry repair solutions.
